It's a Filly!!
Friday February 20th at 11:15pm, we had our first foal of the year arrive. She is a lovely, very correct, strong and healthy chestnut filly, with two high white socks behind and a big blaze!
What a rude awakening! To be born in February on a cold cold night... poor girl! We came down to do night check around 10pm, and and checked Brittany (her Dam). I took her blanket off, and she just sighed and looked at me. She had just started to show a small amount of wax on her teats that morning as well. I had a feeling she was going to deliver that night. So I went up to the house, got a cot, my book, and a warm blanket to camp out in the tack room with, and headed back to the barn. I have a camera set up in the foaling stall, with a tv monitor in the tack room. I set up the cot, set the monitor on a stool close by, and as I did this, glanced at the screen... the
mare was down! I went to her stall, and she was just beginning to deliver the filly. That was the easiest foal watch I've ever had to do! The birthing was very smooth and uncomplicated, and the filly was up within an hour and a half nursing. It sure is a relief when everything goes well!
